ADRAA AGRICULTURE COLLEGE
Course Code: SA HF
Duration: One week to three months (depending on package selected)
This informal certificate program is conducted at the college and is tailored for practicing horticulture farmers of all academic levels who wish to strengthen their skills in modern horticultural production. The training is delivered through a practical, hands on approach to ensure inclusivity and relevance for farmers across diverse backgrounds. Assessment is carried out by the National Assessment body, UVTAB, under the informal program framework. The course is highly relevant to climate change adaptation strategies for smallholder farmers. By equipping participants with knowledge in sustainable horticultural practices, the program helps farmers diversify income sources, improve food security, and adopt climate smart techniques that reduce vulnerability to environmental shocks. Upon completion, trainees will be well prepared to establish and manage their own horticultural enterprises, contributing to improved livelihoods and resilient farming systems.
The primary objective of the Horticulture Farming course is to equip learners with rapid, hands on technical skills and commercial knowledge to produce, process, and market high value fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. This short term training bridges the gap between traditional subsistence farming and modern, export ready commercial horticulture, while promoting climate smart agricultural practices.
By the end of the training, learners will be able to: • Apply climate smart horticultural practices to enhance resilience and sustainability. • Produce high value crops including fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamentals for local and export markets. • Implement modern cultivation techniques such as greenhouse farming, irrigation management, and integrated pest control. • Process and add value to horticultural products for improved market competitiveness. • Develop agribusiness and marketing strategies to access domestic and international markets. • Manage resources efficiently (water, soil, and inputs) to adapt to climate variability. • Contribute to national climate adaptation goals through sustainable horticultural production. • Strengthen financial literacy and farm management skills for profitable enterprise development. • Adopt innovative technologies in horticulture to increase productivity and reduce post harvest losses. • Empower communities by promoting horticulture as a pathway to improved nutrition, income diversification, and livelihood resilience.
